A man has been jailed for punching a baby repeatedly in the head, leaving him with lifelong brain damage.

Jordan Cattell assaulted the baby in Walsall in 2018 while the infant was lying in his cot, causing multiple skull fractures and haemorrhaging.

The 10-month-old survived his injuries but will need full-time care for the rest of his life due to his disabilities, police said.

Cattell, aged 25, of Selbourne Road in Handsworth, was sentenced to 14 years in prison at Wolverhampton Crown Court.

When questioned by officers, he claimed that the baby had fallen over and pleaded not guilty to a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent

Det Con Lucy Simpson from West Midlands Police said: "This was an upsetting case, particularly as it has such a long-lasting effect on the victim, at the time a small, innocent baby.

"The sustained injuries have impacted the victim’s life, leading to lifelong disabilities.

"It has taken years of hard work to bring this case to court and I’m glad Cattell has been put behind bars for a significant period of time."
