Rail travellers across the South Western Railway (SWR) network face disruption due to problems in Dorset and Hampshire.

Earlier, track operator Network Rail reported a signalling issue at a depot in Bournemouth.

The firm said SWR had since experienced a train fault on the line between Hook and Basingstoke, and a reported trespasser at New Milton.

It said delays and cancellations were expected across all SWR services until the end of the day.

The train fault meant power to the tracks was switched off for safety reasons, the firm said.

On its , it said: "The resulting congestion has caused stock and train crew displacement across the network this afternoon, through into this evening.

"Additionally, an emergency call was received from a train in the New Milton area, reporting a trespasser on the line, which resulted in power to the tracks being switched off for safety reasons, further hampering efforts to restore the service to normal."

It said services running towards Portsmouth, Salisbury, Exeter St Davids, Southampton Central, Bournemouth and Weymouth were affected.
