Derby City Council said Osmaston Road towards Spider Island experienced "large volumes of traffic"

Plans to create new bus lanes on two busy Derby routes have been announced by the city council.

Public consultations have been launched on plans to alter the A6 Duffield Road in Darley Abbey and Osmaston Road approaching the Spider Island in Allenton.

Should both schemes go ahead, funding for the works will come from the government鈥檚 Bus Service Improvement Plan, The Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS) said.

Derby City Council said the changes "would help contribute to climate change objectives, reduce air pollution and improve public health鈥.

The council says currently there are daily significant queues on Duffield Road during the morning peak period with queues of up to 150 vehicles back from the Broadway junction.

It wants to narrow existing traffic lanes to accommodate a new inbound bus lane between the junctions of Thatch Close and Mile Ash Lane.

An existing on-carriageway cycle lane would be removed but a new one would be created on the roadside pavement to share with pedestrians.

The council said: "The scheme would reduce bus delays by an average of over 150 seconds during the morning peak period and by over 8 minutes during severe congestion events."

Congestion concerns

The second proposal is to widen the carriageway on Osmaston Road between the junctions of Nightingale Road and the Spider Island to accommodate a new bus lane.

A shared cycle lane and pedestrian walkway would also be installed next to the bus lane alongside revamped crossings and junctions on Ascot Drive.

The council said: "Studies showed that congestion and queues were observed on all roads in the area, but the largest delays were on the outbound Osmaston Road between Nightingale Road and Spider Island.

"Large queues were also observed at the Ascot Drive junction, heading into Ascot Drive in the morning peak period and out of Ascot Drive during the afternoon peak period.鈥

The consultations are due to run until 27 October.
