Queues on the M6 after a 'serious' crash between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent

  • Published

Six people have been taken to hospital after two crashes on a section of the M6.

The motorway was closed shortly after 11:30 GMT on Monday following collisions on the northbound and southbound carriageways between junctions 16 for Crewe and 15 for Stoke-on-Trent.

More than five hours later, National Highways said the M6 was open on that stretch and there were delays of two hours involving queuing traffic.

Tailbacks were stretching for nine miles, up to Junction 18, and it warned that both the diversion route and surrounding roads were also very busy.

A man, woman and child were taken to Royal Stoke University Hospital after the two-car crash on the southbound side, which happened at 11:35 GMT.

A woman and two children were also taken to the same hospital after two lorries and a car crashed on the northbound side at about 11:50 GMT.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said one man was seriously injured in the first crash, receiving specialist trauma care at the scene before being taken to hospital.

A woman involved in the same incident had "potentially serious" injuries, while the four other patients were less seriously hurt.
