A Leicester underpass is set to close for three days while "essential" work to upgrade a major water main takes place.

Southgates Underpass in Vaughan Way will be shut from 19:00 BST on Friday by Severn Trent, which is carrying out the works.

The water company said proactive work to upgrade the "key" pipe, which supplies both the local hospital and prison, will take place over the weekend.

A sign-posted diversion – via St Nicholas Circle and Peacock Lane – will be in place throughout the works.

Sophie Evans-Young, regional water network lead at Severn Trent, said the work is to help maintain supply to key locations in the city centre.

"We’re doing this work over the weekend to avoid impacting commuters during the week, and would like to apologise for any disruption and thank everyone in advance for their patience and understanding," she said.
