Ten schools in Cardiff have been forced to shut after a water main burst.

The faulty water main is in Fairwater and is affecting the Pentrebane, Ely and Danescourt areas.

Welsh Water has warned that people in the affected areas may have low pressure or complete loss of their water supply.

The company apologised for the inconvenience and said engineers were working to fix it, but has not said when the water supply will return.

It added it had used tankers and was "re-routing water supplies", helping it to reduce the impact from 11,000 to 2,500 homes throughout Friday, and had set up a bottled water station in the carpark of Tesco at Culverhouse Cross.

Cardiff council said the following schools had been forced to shut:

  • Ysgol Gymraeg Coed y Gof

  • Pentrebane Primary

  • Holy Family RC Primary in Pentrebane

  • Danescourt Primary

  • Ysgol Plasmawr

  • Mary Immaculate High School

  • Cardiff West High School

  • St Francis RC Primary in Ely

  • Windsor Clive Primary School in Ely

  • Fairwater Primary School

Welsh Water's Lee MacGregor said: "We are messaging customers who may have no water or low pressure and will be continuing to keep everyone informed."

The company also said it would be setting up bottled water stations in the affected areas and delivering water to customers on the .

Cardiff council parents at the affected schools had been contacted directly.
