In pictures: Cold weather continues in UK

Severe transport disruption caused by the UK's freezing weather continues for another day. Heavy snow on the M5 motorway in Somerset caused treacherous conditions for drivers between Weston-super-Mare and Exeter.

Elsewhere snow ploughs attempted to keep roads open, though some drivers who got into difficulty had abandoned their cars by the road side.

Many decided to remain at home rather than attempt what could be a treacherous journey to work. The Highways Agency has advised motorists to check conditions before venturing out.

Thousands of people were forced to spend another night at Heathrow Airport, outside London, after flight cancellations over the weekend. Delays and cancellations are expected for days to come.

Airport operator BAA has apologised for the disruption, but Transport Secretary Philip Hammond said aviation was a "safety-first business".

With the cold weather set to continue, thousands of people face further disruption to their Christmas travel plans.

Over the weekend some shops reported lower takings than expected as shoppers remained at home. Here in Wells, Somerset, shopkeepers were out clearing the snow from the footpath.

A blanket of snow fell on Stonehenge in Wiltshire...

And the beach in Weston-Super-Mare also resembled a polar landscape.

As Christmas draws near many will be hoping that the warnings of more heavy snow to come in some areas turn out to be wrong.
