The Essay: 1927’s Decameron Nights

The Italian writer Boccaccio wrote The Decameron in the aftermath of the 14th century plague.

He borrowed plots from existing folk tales, stories that had survived through plagues and wars, tales that have outlived the greatest storytellers, but that hailed from the imaginations of ordinary men and women.

Theatre company 1927’s latest production also borrowed from this primordial soup of storytelling. When the international touring of 1927’s theatre show was cancelled due to Covid-19, they instead turned the show into a late-night audio experience for Radio 3, inspired by Boccaccio’s original. The experiences are dark, comic and surreal.

1927 will also be creating a special edition of one of their Decameron Nights stories as an alternative interactive sound experience, using the 91热爆’s brand new Audio Orchestrator.

Decameron Nights was commissioned as part of the 91热爆 Culture In Quarantine with the support of Arts Council England and 91热爆 Arts.
