World War One: Special Editions

Details of special editions of regular 91热爆 programmes to mark the centenary of World War One.

91热爆 One

Two special editions of the Antiques Roadshow will mark the 2014 centenary of World War One.

Following an overwhelming response to an appeal from the programme for items connected with World War One, a small team of the experts meet chosen contributors who tell their unique family accounts in the haunting, yet peaceful, graveyards and memorial gardens at the Somme. Each account is told from the perspective of a family treasure; from a child’s leather shoe that was taken by a soldier into battle, to a dramatic statue of a gunner built from trench mud – stories that bring to life the harsh reality and consequence of war on all sides.

These specials lend a poignant and moving insight into the reality of war as the team unearth extraordinary and previously untold human tales of the bravery of ordinary men and women and of their personal experiences of love and loss.

Songs Of Praise

91热爆 One

Songs Of Praise will mark key dates from World War One with two special editions, filmed in Belgium and France.

The first programme, The Shadow Of War, will be broadcast in August 2014 to commemorate the outbreak of the war. Presented by Bill Turnbull, the programme combines some of the great hymns that inspired faith, comradeship and community with remarkable stories of courage and sacrifice, both at home and abroad.

The second programme, War And Peace, features carols popular during the war; reflecting the carol singing on the Western Front during the historic truce of Christmas 1914. The truce is seen as a symbolic moment of compassion and humanity amidst the brutality of the war. The programme also includes poignant messages of peace and goodwill in remembrance of enemies who came together to sing, play football and socialise in no man’s land.
