Eleanor Oldroyd investigates how Olympians deal with the fear of injury and illness in the biggest year of their careers. Eleanor speaks to Dean Macey, Steve Cram and Katharine Merry all of whom had to deal with huge injury setbacks as they prepared for the Olympic games in the past.

Four years ago the British Heptathlete Jessica Ennis was forced to pull out of the Beijing games because of an ankle injury. Eleanor hears from her coach Tony Minichello who must now get her to the start line in London fully fit and prepared.

Lord of the Rings – a special feature on IOC President Jacques Rogge

Jacques Rogge, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), has said the IOC cannot guarantee the London 2012 Games will be a clean Olympics but the legacy for the Games is already in place, in an exclusive interview with 5 live sport.

However, Rogge goes on to say that the IOC “will be doing everything that is humanly possible” to minimise the threat of doping but it would be “naive and misleading” to think there would be no positive cases. He adds that the IOC has a “moral obligation” to parents of young athletes to protect the health of their children [from doping].

Speaking about the legacy of London 2012, Rogge says “legacy is there [already]…even before the Games”, citing the regeneration of the Stratford site in terms of housing and parkland. The IOC President continues that there will be “no white elephants” in the Olympic Park with tenants secured for Olympic Park sports venues and speaks about the “soft legacy” of the Games of increased participation in sports amongst young people resulting decrease in obesity, plus a boost for London tourism.
