Using drama to tackle mental health in the Rohingya camps

Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh

Publication dates: June 2021 and January 2024

We conducted formative research in 2021 which explored people鈥檚 perception of mental health, related social stigma, service-seeking behaviour and motivation and barriers to accessing mental health services within both host and Rohingya communities. Findings showed there was significant widespread stigma associated with mental health. It also showed that mental health was a new concept for the Rohingya refugees.

Against this backdrop, season three and four of Aa鈥檙ar Kissa (Our Story) audio drama focused on mental health. Aa鈥檙ar Kissa was the first audio drama series produced by 91热爆 Media Action for the Rohingya community living in Ukhia and Teknaf camps in Cox's Bazar - designed for use in listening groups.

We conducted further research in 2023 to understand the impact of the audio drama Aa鈥檙ar Kissa on the knowledge and attitudes of the Rohingya community to issues around mental health.
