This session will explore what's working to support a robust media sector able to report on the wide range of crises confronting our global community. Information integrity is only achievable with an independent, free and pluralistic media. The UN Global Principles for Information Integrity underscore that robust and urgent responses are needed to support public interest news organisations, journalists and media workers. The Principles call for protecting press freedom and promoting ethical conduct within the media.

- Emergency platforms and emerging crises: Improving international responses to complex crises
From emerging conflicts, large-scale climatic and environmental disasters to major socio-economic disruptions, the world is facing an unprecedented rise of multiple and intersecting crises, which is challenging sustainable development progress. As part of the Pact for the Future, The UN Secretary-General proposed the development of an Emergency Platform that can strengthen international response to complex global shocks. This session will explore challenges of today’s emerging crises and share perspectives on the importance and benefits of a new platform that can effectively address today and tomorrow’s crises.
Moderated by Simon Bishop, CEO, 91Èȱ¬ Media Action. With Carl Skau, Deputy Executive Director World Food Programme; Inger Ashing, CEO, Save the Children International; Nena Stoiljkovic, Under Secretary for Global Relations and Humanitarian Diplomacy IFRC.

About our speakers
Jonathan Munro became 91Èȱ¬ News Global Director in September 2024. In this role, spanning international services, he is Director of the 91Èȱ¬ World Service and oversees 91Èȱ¬ Monitoring. Jonathan is also Deputy CEO of 91Èȱ¬ News and Current Affairs.
Jonathan joined the 91Èȱ¬ in 2014 and has led 91Èȱ¬ News coverage through every major story over the last decade, from Brexit to UK general elections and recent political upheaval, the Israel/Gaza and Ukraine conflicts and the death of HM The Queen. He recently led the complex transformation of the 91Èȱ¬â€™s business in India, putting in place a new structure and operating model.
For most of 2022, Jonathan acted as Interim Director of 91Èȱ¬ News. During this period, he sat on the 91Èȱ¬ Board and the Director General’s Executive Committee.
Jonathan is a Trustee of 91Èȱ¬ Children in Need, and led a flagship project focusing on mental health support for children and young people across the UK. He is also a supporter of 91Èȱ¬ Media Action, the 91Èȱ¬'s international charity.
He was previously at ITN for 26 years, joining as an editorial trainee and going on to work as a correspondent in the UK, Europe and around the world. Jonathan covered the Balkans war, both Gulf wars and the Beijing and London Olympics. He has worked extensively in the United States, Russia and Africa, and was Europe Correspondent for three years and Political News Editor for two.
Jonathan received an RTS Judges’ Award for negotiating the UK’s first televised Prime Ministerial debates in 2010.
Jonathan Munro was born in Sheffield and educated at Nottingham University.
Simon Bishop has been CEO of 91Èȱ¬ Media Action since July 2023.
Previously, he was CEO of The Power of Nutrition from January 2021 until June 2023. He has more than 25 years of experience in international development, including as the deputy chief executive of global children's charity Plan International UK and as Special Adviser to the UK Government’s Secretary of State for International Development. Simon is also currently chair of the Coalition for Global Prosperity, co-chair of the United Against Malnutrition and Hunger Alliance, and a trustee of the John Lewis and Partners Foundation.
Simon has also been a strategy advisor to The Prince of Wales' Charitable Foundation and completed a number of roles with The Shell Foundation, The United Nations Foundation and the 91Èȱ¬. As a Fulbright Scholar, Simon completed Masters degrees in International Relations and Journalism at Columbia University, and holds a Masters in Economics and Geography from Edinburgh University.
