What are the Remote Interaction Guidelines?
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the demand for software that enhances remote togetherness. Inspired by board games, the Remote Interaction Guidelines are product design recommendations aimed at improving the sense of togetherness, social connection, and engagement. They’re not visually prescriptive and focus on the underlying mechanisms of an application and the motivations of its users.
The guidelines are the result of a two year by 91Èȱ¬ R&D and offer any team working on multiplayer applications a robust checklist to make sure they’re focused on important social metrics.
A few things to think about before you start
Togetherness
Provide a shared space where everyone is represented. Show what everyone is doing, what they’re intending to do, and what they have done.
Social Connection
Set a common goal, then give everyone a different and complementary role. Offer opportunities for individuals to work things out independently.
Engagement
Ensure the space changes over time and use milestones to display progress towards the goal. Where appropriate, create uncertainty or pressure and share successes and failures with everyone.
What have we learnt creating the Remote Interaction Guidelines?
As 91Èȱ¬ R&D looks towards the future of public service media on the internet we think that participatory technologies are key to better serve our audience’s needs. They give people a voice and agency, but also let them connect, communicate and collaborate.
Our Remote Interaction Guidelines are specifically designed to address these needs, particularly in terms of togetherness and social connection. In this new reality where teams, families, friends and other groups are all distributed and apart, this is more important than ever.
We’re looking forward to seeing how other people use these guidelines to design experiences that will create a stronger social connection between their users.
