Work and MoneyYou are in: London > London Local > Croydon > Work and Money > Exposing Cllr Gatland was a 'necessary sacrifice' Campaigners plan next steps Exposing Cllr Gatland was a 'necessary sacrifice'The Save our Schools (SoS) campaign has been spurred on by its success in getting Maria Gatland, the Cabinet Member for Children鈥檚 Services, removed from office. Now they have their sights set on Education Director Dave Hill. Angry campaigners are calling for the Director of Education鈥檚 head.听 At a meeting of the SoS group and teaching unions in Croydon, protesters pledged to fight the schools' reorganisation proposals to the bitter end.听
Bill Greenshields, President of the NUT, says all members in the seven schools which the council proposes to convert to either Academies or Trust schools will be balloted for strike action.听 Voting will begin on Friday 12 December. In a statement to the media, the NUT said: 鈥淪hould the crazy idea of selling off all the secondary schools currently under council control (plus a couple of primary schools) into private hands still be Croydon鈥檚 policy in the new year then we will be left with no alternative but to take strike action some time in late January or early February鈥. 鈥淲e regret being forced into taking this action. However the disruption to children's education caused by a day's strike action is nothing when compared to the damage to our pupil's education that could result from these plans proceeding un-amended." 'Director of Education must resign'Having been responsible for exposing Councillor Gatland鈥檚 past involvement with the Provisional IRA, the group say they're now ready to take on the entire council if necessary.听 They are now going after the scalp of the Director of Education, David Hill. Mr Hill is in the firing line not only for his involvement in pushing ahead with the borough鈥檚 largest education shake up, but for his more recent decision to disband the entire governing body at Westwood Girl鈥檚 College. One of the Governors of the dismissed Board, Ms Gee Bernard argued his decision was unlawful and pleaded with the unions to assist the now defunct Board to challenge the council and insist on their (the Board's) reinstatement. Dr Peter Latham, unrepentant Sacking was a necessary evilDr Peter Latham was the SoS member whose research and accusation led to the resignation and subsequent dismissal of Councillor Gatland.听 He is unrepentant and, responding to criticisms of his action, he said, he had no regrets:听 "It's the democratic accountability and not the future political career of one Tory politician.听 Our children鈥檚 future is far more important than that and that's what's at stake for us."
