Her resignation comes as the council seeks to replace the entire school鈥檚 governing body.

The radical decision has been taken as a result of an independent enquiry which has revealed a number of procedural failings.听 The council has now asked the Secretary of State for permission to replace the governors of the school.

An experienced executive head teacher Colette Singleton will now assume overall responsibility for the school with immediate effect.

The vice-principal, Jacqueline Jenkins, will have responsibility for the day-to-day running of the school.

The existing governing body will continue with their responsibilities until the interim executive board is appointed, which is likely to be mid-December.

Necessary action

Dave Hill, executive director for children said: 鈥淔ollowing an independent investigation into various concerns at Westwood Girls College for Language and Art, we believed it was necessary to take swift action to strengthen the governance at the school.

"Westwood is entering an exciting phase in its development as it moves towards becoming a National Challenge Trust school.听 Under the new interim executive board, and the experienced executive headship of Colette Singleton, I am confident that the school will thrive.鈥�"

Ms Hedley's resignation is the latest in the borough.听 It follows the departure of two other high profile heads earlier this year.

Beleaguered Edenham High head Jacey Downes quit in July, while Selsdon High's Janet Packer left a month before.
