Speaking on a 91热爆 programme, John Murphy the Principal at Croydon鈥檚 newest Academy says he has transformed behaviour in his school by treating his students with respect. On a debate on Corporal Punishment in Schools he said: "Cane our students?听 We don't even shout at them!听 We treat all our students with respect and want them to get the most out of their education."听 "We care for our students: 17 members of staff ran up Ben Nevis to raise money to help pay for some of our students to go on our annual ski trip". "Oasis Academy is fully inclusive.听 We have the highest aspirations for each and every student and in return they respect us, their teachers.听听 We have a very positive learning atmosphere throughout the Academy, at the heart of which is our rewards system."听
"If students do something wrong we might raise an eyebrow to show our displeasure and that is enough for them to know that they have overstepped the mark and they will need to face a consequence for their misdemeanour.鈥 41 year old John, has held five headships prior to his appointment at Oasis Academy, the former Coulsdon High School which has been extremely controversial.听 Opened at the beginning of the summer term, it's being seen as the benchmark for a number of schools in the borough.听- If the proposals to close some of the borough's schools get the go ahead next month, the local authority plans to open two more Academies. The formation of a Student Leadership Team is being sighted by John as being the key factor in transforming behaviour in the classroom.
