Last year it was marred by controversy.Ìý This year though organisers promise a bigger and better event for the entire family.Ìý The free celebrations will see a range of UK and international artists performing across both days. Musical highlights will include: Stereo MCS, MOBO award winning Finley Quaye, Speed Caravan, Joji Hirota & the Taiko drummers, the Dhol Blasters, Sukshinder Shinda...and many more!Ìý Party goers having fun in the park As well as four stages of world and popular music, there are tons to amuse the kids including a dedicated kids’ area, outdoor theatre, the global market, food village and funfair. For film lovers there’s a chance to catch a sneak preview of a number of rare film gems recently uncovered by Ajay Chhabra, artistic director of Nutkhut as they are screened for the first time in over 50 years in the mini-cinema. Kids can get creative and messy at the World Party Kids’ Area. Artists will be on hand to help them make their own mod-rock mini beast to paint and take home. And, while their mini monster dries they can make their own piece of jewellery inspired by the catwalk, fairy headdresses or surfer dudes! shop responsiblyWhilst everyone is being encouraged to come along and have some fun, Croydon’s Friends of the Earth will be injecting a little sense of responsibility into the occasion. They will be asking local residents to make a pledge to reduce their use of plastic bags. In return for writing their pledge on a board at the group’s stall, they will receive a free r-eusable bag to help them put their promise into action.Ìý It’s estimated that the average UK resident uses over 200 plastic shopping bags per year, adding up to 13 billion for the country as a whole.Ìý So, Croydon Friends of the Earth says it’s trying to encourage local people to take matters into their own hands, by using re-usable bags when they go shopping.
