Hawick was also noted for its textile production, and was in the late 18th Century one of the leading manufacturers of hosiery.

In 1771, the industry made its first steps towards mass production when stocking frames were introduced to Hawick by a local magistrate, John Hardie, however, it was not until the Napoleonic Wars that Hawick began to supply to more than the local market.
The town recovered from a post war slump in demand and by the 1840s was producing more than a million pairs of stockings a year.

During the mid 19th Century, fashions changed and Hawick concentrated on producing underwear.
Firms in the Borders and in Hawick in particular realised the importance of branding, and established a reputation for producing luxury goods.
