Keep it in the family

We were visiting my Austrian wife's sister in a small town in the south of the country. One day, I took her sister's children home from school and a neighbour took an interest, wondering who I was. I tried to explain that I was the brother-in-law of the children's mother but the neighbour's eyes widened slowly and she scuttled off. When I got home, I proudly told everyone that I had managed to have a conversation in German. However, I had made a small, critical mistake: instead of Schwager I had said schwanger and had, in fact, told the neighbour that I was pregnant by my wife's sister!
