Harassed waitress

I was in Dortmund and am particularly partial to a type of beer called "Bock". So when the waitress arrived I asked her Hast du Bock? She looked stunned and swept away, leaving me totally bewildered and my German wife on the floor nearly crying with laughter - I'd apparently asked the waitress in colloquial German if she was feeling horny. But I did get my beer.

Manda, you didn't do anything wrong there - Ich habe keinen/null Bock auf [irgendwas] indeed means I can't be bothered / I'm not interested in [anything], usually without sexual connotation. I would always say Bockbier, by the way.

haha... classic ;) also loved the "he asked if he could lend him a male goat"-bit!

That is truly awesome. I've found myself addicted to German hip hop for a few months now; I find it superior to it's English equivalent because I mostly don't know what the hell they're talking about. Anyway! The exchange "Hast du Bock? / Na klar!" comes up rather frequently, which is how I came to search for this post in the first place ... I always just assumed Afrob was asking Ferris MC if he could lend him a male goat. But now I can sleep at night. The end of the story.

I thought keinen Bock haben meant can't be bothered without any sort of sexual connotation ... I'm now thinking back to my time in Germany when this was one of my favourite phrases, and wondering if the men I said it to had other ideas?!!

Bock auf etwas haben also means 'to fancy something', so Hast du Bock also means 'Do you fancy'. The sexual connotation is not automatically there, depending on who you talk to and how you say it.

That's hilarious! Do keep trying. I don't want to know how much I get mixed up in English!

Excellent one! Grammatically entirely correct - and still so wrong.
