My wife's a vegetable
Many years ago whilst on holiday in Brittany I wanted to tell the waiter that my wife was a vegetarian. I didn't know the French for vegetarian, so improvised by extending the word for vegetable, and said the she was une légumière. I guess that I told him that she was a vegetable seller! Still after a smile he seemed to understand. I later discovered that the French for vegetarian is un végétarien, une végétarienne - it couldn't have been easier!

A French girl in my English class made a similar mistake when trying to tell us she was a vegetarian, she told us she was a vegetable!
Well at least you didn't say you were a fruit like I did in Paris.
Although I knew the correct word when in Cologne (wir sind Vegetarier, we're vegetarians), instead of suggesting anything, the waitress brought a tray with every vegetable in season. A huge mound!
I was in French class and did'nt know the word for vegetarien (well actually my teacher told us and I was not paying attention) and used that same word! I caused such a big disruption we all had to do the classwork for homework ...
When I went to France last year in July I came to know that you are végétarien /-ne if you have no meat but you eat fish and eggs because fish is considered vegetarian in France. And you are a végétalien /-ne if you have none of the above i.e. strictly veggies!
