Period room in a Wedgwood style

Period palette

Bring the tones of the past back to life with heritage colours.

Heritage colours are one of the success stories of the last decade. Nearly all the major paint companies now have their own ranges.

Some have been developed in conjunction with bodies such as the National Trust or the V&A. Others are an approximation of what a colour would have looked like in any given period.

Don't get bogged down by whether a colour is historically suitable for the age of a house, unless the property is being restored or renovated to match its original state.

There is no need to slavishly follow the colours of the time. For instance, the range of colours in the eighteenth century was severely limited by the availability of pigments.

A Victorian property would have been decorated in dark sludgy colours that may not be very appealing now, so typical Victorian colours could be used as accents in an otherwise neutral scheme.

Another idea is to give a bathroom a touch of the glamorous art deco era by using the appropriate palette.
