I joined the Army on 15 December 1939, Royal Engineers. I trained at Harper Barracks, Ripon. I joined First Field Squadron in Wiltshire. I went to France in May 1940, landing at Le Havre in early May. I was in action in Normandy in May and June and was evacuated from St Valery-en-Caux in mid-June. I reached Southampton the following day and billetted at the Rifle Brigade Barracks, Winchester. I joined the reformed First Field Squadron in late June 1040 and went to North Africa in October 1940. I arrived in Egypt in December 1940. I went into the desert in January 1941 and saw active service in North Africa for two years, taking part in El Alamein. I went to Italy in January 1944 and saw active service there. I later went to Austria. I returned to England in 1945 and was demobilised in 1946.
