When I was five years old I lived in Brighton Sussex, about the time of the British Expeditionary force withdrew from Dunkirk. Some British, French and Belgian troops came through the town. My mother made a French ticolour flag and the soldiers to sign it. At first they were reluctant to so,but eventually theydid sign it. I wish I had that flag today.

Later I remember they seafront had barbedwire, tank traps, mines and pillboxes with machine guns in them! Also the centre section of Palace and West peirs were blownup.

Me, too. At 13 I was shunted off to Barnstaple, N Devon, to live with the Ovey family. He was Pastor of the mission hall in Rackfield, a narrow and very short cul-de-sac off Boutport Street. They had a 12-year-old daughter and we became, let us say, good chums. Going to and from school I bought Mars Bars (4d each) and Rolos. The boys' school was fantastic - very new, with big classrooms and bags of big windows and an Art master, Mr Fern, who helped me tremendously in my experiments with watercolour. But no bombs were falling at home in Bushey Heath, near Watford, so my parents gave in to my homesickness and took me back after a few months. Shortly afterwards a land mine fell at the top of our road, Ashfield Avenue, on a triangular piece of waste ground. I remember feeling the thump as it exploded. No damage to man or property.
