Autumn foliage
It's not just large trees such as the red oak, Quercus rubra, and ginkgo, Ginkgo biloba, that put on a firework display of autumn foliage. If you鈥檙e restricted for space, deciduous rhododendrons (formerly known as azaleas), and Japanese maples both have leaves that turn brilliant colours. Don鈥檛 forget climbers, such as the ornamental vine, Vitis coignetiae and Virginia creeper, Parthenocissus quinquefolia.
Autumn berriesBerries and fruit
Autumn brings colourful displays of fruits and berries. Not only do they look attractive, but they are a great food source for the birds and animals in the coming months.
Clematis tanguticaPlants that produce attractive seed-heads
Many perennials produce attractive seed-heads after their flower. Don鈥檛 be too quick to tidy your borders and you鈥檒l have a beautiful display through the winter. Joining them in the border are the feathery plumes of ornamental grasses, such as miscanthus and stipa, while in the hedgerow and on walls and fences the fluffy seed-heads of clematis such as C. tangutica and C. alpina draw the eye.
