Localised conditions
Another influence on your garden鈥檚 temperature is its microclimate - or specific, localised conditions. Find out more about climate and weather in Module 8, The gardening year.
Town gardens are warmer than rural ones. Buildings offer protection from cold winds. If you live in a frost pocket, beware! These can be natural, but also artificially created by cold, frosty air being trapped by the house or a hedge.
Plant selection
To make selecting plants easy, they are categorised into four groups based on the minimum temperatures they survive in:
Narcissus pseudonarcissus - a hardy plantHardy to -15掳C (5掳F)
Stay in the ground all year and will survive all but, say, one winter in 30. View plant list.
Kniphofia caulescens - a frost-hardy plantFrost hardy to -5掳C (23掳F)
Stay in the ground all year, but will need protecting in cold winters. View plant list.
Osteospermum - a half hardy plantHalf hardy to 0掳C (32掳F)
Stay in the ground all year only in warmest areas, and even here require winter protection. Elsewhere treat as Tender. View plant list.
Begonia - a tender plantTender protect below 4掳C
Cannot survive outside during the winter, and must be brought inside. View plant list.
