"Once Upon a Time in China" is one of the finest movies to come out of Hong Kong during the 90s. Lavish, beautiful, and striking, it is wonderful to see this Tsui Hark classic receive such a good transfer to DVD.
The picture quality is very good, with an unusually rich colour palette (for a Hong Kong film), vivid and sharp in quality. There are some cutaway shots that are a little grainy but this is down to the print. When it matters though, the movie looks stunning.
A new 5.1 sound mix really impresses. Do not opt for the English version - choose Cantonese with subtitles instead. If you don't, the dubbing will spoil otherwise poignant moments. With that aside, this is a highly atmospheric sound track with lashing rain and rolling thunder in chapter 20 that sends a chill down the spine.
Extra features on the disc include a very detailed biography of Jet Li, a large photo gallery, and trailers. Also worth checking out is the interview gallery with Jet Li discussing his Wu Shu skills, and veteran Yam Sai-Kwoon covering everything from his Shaw Brothers roots to tips on being an action star.
As with the "The Big Boss" DVD, Hong Kong film specialist Bey Logan provides a commentary, and is also joined by US actor Mark King who has a role in the film. It's interesting to listen to because Logan generally has a balanced view on Hong Kong films and he rates this movie in his personal top ten along with "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". This is in sharp contrast to King, who despite appearing in countless Kung Fu films deplores them all.
