Bruce Lee's impact on the action genre was profound and it's quite incredible that his films have been so poorly treated in the past. Dodgy old prints, awful dubbing, clumsy translations of the original Mandarin language into English, and ridiculous cuts by the BBFC have very nearly destroyed his movies. Finally justice is being done to Lee with this incredible new DVD release of "The Big Boss" from the UK Hong Kong Legends label.
For once, it's good to be living in Region 2 as we're the first in the world to get the restored and uncut version of Lee's first smash hit movie to watch as originally intended.
The plot line is simple and revolves around Lee discovering that the ice factory where he works is in fact a front for a drug trafficking ring. Having lost friends and family to this gang he decides to bring them to justice with deadly and incredible displays of Wing Chun.
Restored from the original negatives (with eight previously cut scenes re-instated), the DVD release boasts a fine picture quality, the likes of which fans will never have seen before. There's still some occasional print damage but this isn't a problem when the exterior shots look as fresh as they do.
The slick, animated menu system leads you to many fine extra features. These include trailers (with deleted footage) and a detailed, animated biography. Best of all though is the commentary from Bey Logan. He was the former editor of the action-film-based "Impact" magazine and currently works in the Hong Kong film industry. He is able to offer a balanced view on Bruce Lee films and points out many fascinating facts with authority and years of research.
