A spirit of youthful exuberance and invention animates a diverse programme of contemporary works from Britten, Shostakovich and Raymond Yiu.
Former 91热爆 Symphony Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor David Robertson continues this season鈥檚 series of Shostakovich symphonies with the First. Written while the composer was still a student, its precocious brilliant is tempered by a sense of darkness and foreboding. The same youthful spirit animates The London Citizen Exceedingly Injured, with its skilful blend of popular style and symphonic scope. Martin Owen becomes the third section principal to step into the spotlight this season, as soloist in Britten鈥檚 enduringly popular song-cycle the Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings.
