One of Europe鈥檚 greatest orchestras returns to the Proms. In the first of two concerts they pair two contrasting symphonies 鈥� Beethoven鈥檚 joyous Second and Shostakovich鈥檚 Fifth, written under the shadow of his public humiliation under Stalin's regime.

About This Event

One of Europe鈥檚 greatest orchestras, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, returns to the Proms under Yannick N茅zet-S茅guin.

In the first of two concerts (see also Prom 17) they pair two contrasting symphonies in a programme that moves from sunshine to bitterness. 鈥楾his symphony is smiling throughout,鈥� wrote Berlioz of Beethoven鈥檚 Second Symphony 鈥� a work in which seemingly sunny moods conceal personal tragedy and loss.

Shostakovich鈥檚 Fifth Symphony was written under the cloud of intense scrutiny and artistic repression following the public criticism of the composer at the hands of Stalin.
