Concert Information
A lone trumpet sounds in the darkness and Gustav Mahler begins his great symphonic struggle from tragedy to triumph 鈥 by way of midnight storms, joyous horn-calls, and arguably the most tender love-letter ever written without words: the rapturous 'Adagietto'. Bruch鈥檚 much-loved Violin Concerto comes from the same world of solitary wanderers and distant horn-calls. It鈥檚 perfect for what one critic has called the 鈥渓ovely freedom and sense of fantasy鈥 of Henning Kraggerud 鈥 a violinist who has something fresh to say in even the most familiar music. And to begin, discover the extraordinary soundworld of Chaya Czernowin. 鈥淐an you imagine making your ear into a huge microphone listening to an amalgam of noises like the noises inside one鈥檚 body, then at once listening to a huge crowd of thousands of people?鈥, she asks. This 鈥渓arge scale miniature鈥 evokes exactly that.
Please note: Alpesh Chauhan replaces the 91热爆 SSO's Chief Conductor Thomas Dausgaard who is unwell.
Prelude: 6.45pm in the Recital Room (free to ticket-holders, subject to seating availability): in a change to the previously advertised Prelude, Alpesh Chauhan, in conversation with 91热爆 SSO violinist Alex Gascoine, talks about his life as a conductor.
