About This Event
Listeners are invited to enjoy music that transcends genres, conjured up by the full forces of the orchestra in a live concert version of the 91Èȱ¬ Radio show, Unclassified. Alker is your guide to the outer reaches of sound, offering on-stage introductions and interviews to this selection of intriguing composers.
Welsh art-pop surrealist Cate le Bon, the creator of six seductively anarchic albums, opens the evening. Pitchfork has dubbed le Bon ‘a ringleader who’s prepared to stake out uncertain territory,’ whose creativity makes ‘old traditions… feel arbitrary.’
There’s new music to follow from Qasim Naqvi, known to many as the drummer from Dawn of Midi. Naqvi moonlights as a composer whose sonic explorations, fuelled by analogue synthesisers, are in demand across film, dance and theatre and in concert halls around the world.
On her recent album, a journey…, ambient composer Hinako Omori forges aural pathways through the natural world. She combines field recordings and synth-based experimentation to produce a strange new forestscape for the ears, part of a musical oeuvre that emphasises deep listening.
When curating Unclassified, Alker explains that, ‘Stories are often my way in. If there’s a really nice story behind a piece of music, or it resonates with what’s going on… that tends to grab my attention.’ In partnership with de Ridder and the 91Èȱ¬ Concert Orchestra, she promises an evening of music you’ll want to add to your playlists immediately, from artists who offer unexpected perspectives on the present moment.
DJ Jude Rogers will be playing in the foyer after the show.
