About this Concert

Hear the 91Èȱ¬ Scottish Symphony Orchestra live at the Corran Halls as its busy week of community activities in Oban culminates with this uplifting concert!

Every performance of Vaughan Williams’s most popular work is a special occasion and here the sensational violinist Elena Urioste (former 91Èȱ¬ Radio 3 New Generation Artist) gives voice to the bird. A lark, free from human angst, sings and soars above a pastoral landscape and time stands still.

Inspiration comes in many forms. After visiting the Palace of Holyrood in 1829, the young Felix Mendelssohn wrote, ‘I believe I found today in the old chapel the beginning of my Scottish Symphony’. The Third might allude to the life of Mary Queen of Scots but it also pays tribute to toe-tapping folk tunes along the way.

American composer William Grant Still also took inspiration from his love of nature. His music which begins this concert includes a mysterious evocation of a crisp autumn night.
