About This Event

In 1990 and 1991, Belgian sound artist Baudouin Oosterlynck embarked on a 15,000km journey across Europe by train, bike and on foot. His quest: to find places where silence still exists鈥 beautiful silence.

鈥淵ou can hear the pressure of the air on your eardrums. Variations with altitude, humidity and temperature鈥 We need six days of calm and silence to hear the Variations of Silence鈥, he explains.

Under the pseudonym L鈥橭reille cass茅e (The Broken Ear), Oosterlynck explored the world of sound and NOISE in the 1960s. Over time, his work has evolved into an exploration of the essential act of listening - without producing sound.

He transforms the Recital Room at Tectonics Glasgow into a sanctuary for deep listening. A variety of his 鈥渓istening instruments鈥 will be on display - intricately constructed devices that amplify or alter the perception of sound and silence. 鈥淛ust listen to the quality of the air and the acoustic properties shaped by these instruments鈥, he invites.

Join in, pass in silence, and rethink the role of the listener.
