About this event

Douglas Fairbanks and Allan Dwan’s 1922 silent classic about the legend of Robin Hood is transformed for the 21st Century with a vibrant new score, performed live by the 91Èȱ¬ Symphony Orchestra.

One of the films that shaped the world of Hollywood, Robin Hood had a huge budget, large scale sets and was the first film to have a premiere. Pioneering in its ambitiousness, it is now considered one of the most significant films of early cinema, ripe for musical interpretation. Douglas Fairbanks as Robin Hood masterfully conquers the athletic stunts of the ‘Swashbuckler’ silent films, whilst managing to bring emotional depth to this defining role.

Having written many scores for silent films such as Charlie Chaplin’s Shoulder Arms, Alfred Hitchcock’s Blackmail and Anthony Asquith’s Underground, Neil Brand’s score, conducted by Timothy Brock, provides a new richness and relatability to the film’s building tension and dark humour.

Immediately following the concert there will be Q &A in the Hall hosted by Francine Stock of the BFI, with composer Neil Brand and conductor and arranger Timothy Brock.
