Unfortunately, due to illness, Paul Lewis is no longer able to perform Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.25. The 91Èȱ¬ Philharmonic is grateful to Imogen Cooper for taking his place.
Mozart could turn his hand to more or less anything, but this greatest of musical all-rounders was something of a piano-concerto specialist – in no small part because he was himself a tremendous pianist. His 25th is among his most elegant and expressive.
Just the second orchestral work completed by Igor Stravinsky, the sparkling Scherzo fantastique is full of verve and wonder. Its joyous energy stands in contrast to Tchaikovsky’s turbulent Fourth Symphony, written during a particularly choppy period in the composer’s always complicated love life.
