Music of a decidedly Mediterranean hue is the theme for this afternoon鈥檚 concert. Jessica Cottis and the 91热爆 Concert Orchestra have chosen music full of the brio and sunshine associated with Italian classics.

But there is a twist. Rossini鈥檚 Italian Girl in Algiers makes no secret of its non-Italian setting and William Tell is the tale of a Swiss marksman. Mendelssohn created his Italian Symphony (鈥溾he most cheerful thing I
have composed so far鈥) as a German tourist, yet for many it is the orchestral portrayal of Italy without rival.

Nino Rota is famously associated with The Godfather and films of Fellini, so this playful and elegant Bassoon Concerto provides a rare opportunity to hear his concert music. Beethoven (who Rossini visited) wrote his Romance in F at a time when he was coming to terms with his deafness. It is a work of tender lyricism and gives our concert a moment of quiet beauty before the gusto of Mendelssohn鈥檚 joyous masterpiece.
