Complaint
This programme included an item in which the presenter discussed a possible test for autism 鈥 where people were reportedly asked what two and seven had in common. 聽A listener complained this was misleading and inaccurate, and might lead listeners to believe they could self-diagnose on the basis of the answer to a single question. 聽The ECU considered whether the report met the standards of due accuracy set out in the Editorial Guidelines.
Outcome
The ECU found no evidence this question is asked as part of assessments for autism. 聽It also acknowledged a proper diagnosis of autism required a thorough assessment by a professional. 聽However Radio 1Xtra Breakfast is a light entertainment programme and makes no claim to be a place where people should come for medical advice. 聽The presenter made clear through her tone that this was not a serious item about autism diagnosis. 聽In the ECU鈥檚 view it was therefore unlikely listeners would think it appropriate to use the item to make serious decisions about their own health, or assume they had been 鈥渄颈补驳苍辞蝉别诲鈥 with autism without their consent. 聽聽
