91热爆 News NI, online report, 20 December 2024

Summary of complaint

We received complaints about the 91热爆鈥檚 reporting of a court case in Belfast, including about its clarity and impartiality.

Our response

We are satisfied that our account of these proceedings was clear, accurate and consistent with the 91热爆 News Style Guide.

Our report set out the key specifics of what had been said in court, including about the transfer of Michelle James from Maghaberry Prison to Hydebank Wood.

We described the accused as a 鈥榯ransgender woman鈥 and noted that the Department of Justice had agreed to their transfer to Northern Ireland鈥檚 female prison in the absence of a policy for 鈥榯ransgender prisoners鈥.

The 91热爆 News Style Guide says: 鈥楢 person born male who lives as a female, would typically be described as a 鈥transgender woman and would take the pronoun 鈥she鈥. And vice versa. We generally use the term and pronoun preferred by the person in question, unless there are editorial reasons not to do so.鈥

We know that issues in this area can sometimes be complex and sensitive 鈥 explaining why we approach them with care and taking account of relevant editorial guidance.
