Send a Cow has been working in Africa for over 30 years and has helped over two million people to transform their lives.
Thank you to all the Radio 4 listeners who together generously gave £24,390 to our appeal presented by actress and Send a Cow supporter, Jane Horrocks. The funds raised will support our country programme in Burundi, enabling us to work with families who depend on the only thing they have: the soil beneath their feet.
Ranked as one of the hungriest countries in the world, more than half of Burundian children under five are stunted due to malnutrition. Some 90% of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihood, yet many families do not have the farming knowledge that they need.
The funds raised by the Radio 4 Appeal will enable our frontline African staff, affectionately known by people locally as ‘Angels on Motorbikes’, to support these families for three years; ensuring that families have the skills and confidence to lift themselves out of poverty for good.
They will provide training in sustainable farming, business skills and gender equality so that families can work together to grow nutritious food to eat and sell, providing a vital income that they can invest in their farms and send their children to school. It’s a practical, people-focused approach which empowers communities and breaks the cycle of poverty permanently.
