Everyone at Read Easy UK has been really moved by the generosity of Radio 4 listeners who donated over £31,000 in response to our appeal.
We are so grateful to Richard Madeley for presenting our appeal and communicating so effectively how difficult life is for adults who struggle with reading; many of you who donated added notes to say that you couldn’t imagine what it must be like not to have this essential skill. So thank you, too, for your messages, which we really appreciated.
We know that there are nearly two and a half million adults across England who struggle with the most ordinary everyday tasks because they can’t read properly. Whether it’s doing the shopping, filling in forms at the doctors or supporting their children with their schooling, especially during the pandemic, life without reading can be incredibly difficult and stressful.
Your donations will enable us to support volunteers to set up Read Easy groups in many more parts of the country, and then to train each group’s first volunteer reading coaches. These coaches will go on to provide free, confidential, one-to-one reading coaching, twice a week, to adults who struggle with reading.
We know that the work of these amazing volunteers will have a life-changing impact, not only giving those they support the vital skills they need for everyday life, but also hugely building their confidence and self-esteem, and opening up whole new worlds of possibility for them. As one volunteer reading coach recently expressed it, watching someone learn to read is like watching a flower open. Your support will bring the gift of reading and then many other opportunities to so many more adults across the country. Thank you so much for your generosity.
