Having this prosthetic changed my life. I’m much better. I’ve started to have hope.
We’re over the moon to announce that we raised £45,965  from our 91Èȱ¬ Radio 4 Appeal. Over what has been a challenging year of fundraising, our small team at Hands Up was overwhelmed and touched by the support of Radio 4 listeners. This amount of money goes a long way in Syria and provides a lifeline for the vulnerable Syrians we support.
This year marks Syria’s tenth year in conflict. As is often the case with long-lasting conflicts, Syria has largely fallen out of the news over the years while the lives, families and homes of millions continue to be devastated.
Over 13 million people need humanitarian assistance and there are an estimated 86,000 amputees. These figures are so vast that they have become almost inconsequential; we make it our mission to focus on the human stories behind the numbers. Like 12-year-old amputee Rayan, whose inspiring story was shared in the appeal.
Now, with the funds raised from this appeal, we can help children like Rayan get back on their feet.
The money raised will be supporting our efforts to scale up our latest project, providing upper-limb prosthetics to children with limb loss from Syria. The funds will also go towards a Primary Health Clinic in northern Syria we support, and a school for 300 Syrian refugee children in the Bekaa Valley, Lebanon.
Thank you to everyone who listened and donated. Your money will mean Syrians can access vital services that, in many places, we can often take for granted. Your money will give Syrians hope again.
A final and special thank you goes to Peter Capaldi who delivered the appeal wonderfully and who perfectly understands, and values, the work that we do.
