BERLIN – Some advance warning is in order. At some point over the next few days, I’ll be sitting down with Ian Wright to interview him for the World Cup Daily.
But I felt that the questions should come from you - not least because they’re sure to be more insightful. If you leave your questions in the comments box below – topics along the lines of his thoughts on the World Cup so far, England’s chances, who else he rates and his favourite World Cup memories – Ian will read out and answer them for the Daily.
I’m hopeful that this will become a regular feature on the show which, by the way, you can watch if you click .
UPDATE: Blog editor writes: Thanks for all your views on Wrighty and your questions. Comments on this post have now been closed.

So far there's only been one game worth a real look and I've seen em all so far. Mexico/Iran was a very good game but the Iranians lost the plot in the second half. As for Engerland? Well if this is the team tipped to be in the final.... then Brazil will certainly win.

Just wondering with the England stiker situation - not bringing Defoe or someone else was clearly a mistake. However I can't understand why people are so against picking Hargreaves, since you don't get to be a regular for Bayern Munich by not being half-decent. What I think they might have done instead is not bother with Scott Carson, since you can replace players who are injured during the tournament - meaning that if one of the keepers got injured, we could replace him anyway - and have an extra outfield player who could actually contribute something positive to the team.

In the England game Motty commented that opening games of World Cups (which this fixture wasn't) are unlucky for goalkeepers as Argentine keeper Pompidou broke his leg versus Cameroon in 90. This actually occurred in the game versus the USSR - their second game. Tighten it up, Motty, or was it the heat?

Can you ask Ian why he agrees with Hansen that England should always try to up the tempo to play more effective football, with long balls and high balls being a large part of playing that way, when as a striker himself, he was successful more when the ball was played to feet ?
England have a fantastic array of skillful players with enough technical ability to match most teams, why do they have such a problem retaining possession ?

If England fail for the third time at a major tournament with Sven can you see Steve McClaren doing a better job and taking us to Euro 2008 glory. We now must be the best international team in Europe, we've beaten the Argentines recently so is it just Brazil that pose a real threat this time again?

Ask why him and the rest of the on camera team are so miserable!
They are at the World Cup finals, the football has been not bad and they sit with long faces and Linekar says in the interval of the Mexico match "Well its not been as bad as we thought". Cut to Hansen, Shearer and others drinking at a cafe - and we're meant to feel sorry for them; And they're spending our licence fee.
So lighten up, get with the crowd and realise that other people can play soccer apart from Europeans.

Tell Wrighty he's a legend. I don't know what these people who complain about him want from a pundit but if its to state the bleeding obvious there's Shearer and Hansen for that. I want a proper Englishman in there who's as disappointed as I am when they produce feeble dross like the Paraguay game.

Ian,
The real question, whats your feelings on Sven not taking your son, SWP. Easily the most gifted right midfielder, we understand he hasnt had a great run of starts at Chelsea but hes a game changer, he will come on in the last 20 mins and terrorise the opposition and totally change a dull game. ( I would start him Shaun but we all know Becks is Sven's little....)
England need more game changers like him, Beckahm although good at what he does is a totally different player and with Joe Cole on the left, SWP would be the ultimate counterpart on the right.
Also just to say great pundit!!! we need more energy in the box, someone whos not gonna look at it like an anorak but someone who looks at it like a fan!!

Perhaps you might ask him why he insults us all by refusing to answer questions, and saying things like 'i'm only interested in england' when watching games involving other countries?

If as you say you only want to comment on England, can the 91Èȱ¬ please hire someone else to do your job during the match's that dont involve England or is that to much to ask. The world cup is supposed to be a festival of world football and if the 91Èȱ¬ wanted to hire someone with no knowledge or interest in anything outside the UK why not use Chris Moyles, I believe he's cheaper.

Why does Wrighty consider himself an expert to comment at the World Cup when he himself was a failure at International level? Scoring 5 goals in 32 games (discounting the 4 he scored against the semi-professional San Marino), surely he feels embarrassed sitting next to a proven legend like Alan Shearer (30 goals in 63 internationals)?
Complain about this post
Why are England always so negative when they go a goal up? If they are going to do well in the World Cup, then if they take the lead they must try and score another rather than sitting on what they have. If they had used this tactic against Portugal at Euro 04 I am sure they would have progressed to the semi finals.

I don't know why you need Ian Wright, an Englishman, to state the obvious when Alan Hansen is there to big the English up. Did you know that the Scots are only nasty because they need to counter Hansen's love for the Auld Enemy? As a Gooner, it is clear to me that you could put together a fantastic, albeit Fantasy, team just containing current Arsenal players.
How do you think the Arsenal boys will get on? Which will stand out? Which will disappoint or be let down by playing in a weak national side?
I think we (Arsenal) suffered after successful campaigns for many of our players who got through to the latter stages of the World Cup in 1998 and then came back worn out.
We then benefitted from France's early exit last time.
Which is better, confidence and form from a successful World Cup or R&R from an early exit?
Nice of you to give Robin some "love" on telly!

Something very strange about watching England play from a foreign field ....or bar in Canada where the audience clap politely pretending to understand watching your team play in the world cup. We all know the highs and heartache of following your team.....but between the smoke and acknowledging that your team are not the automatic favourites just in turning up. I BELIEVE THIS WILL BE A SPECIAL JOURNEY FOR ENGLAND . Hard work wins world cups and the England set up will be working hard on this. The pressure Joe Cole spoke of between the ums n er's, is almost entirely down to the stewardship of the insatiable Press. Look at how it undermines our team, let them get on with it. The players are good enough, not often the rest of the world acknowledges this, but they are human.
They will hold the ball better, get composure, the strikers will find their feet and get sharper, we have the bottle (it's our expression), and our team will grow in this tournament.
From an Englishman traveling the world , "Carpei Deum England"
It is just a game, but it's an arena all football nations look to identify themselves in this journey. An English heart has such deep, true passion and resolve, it's why Gazza's tear reached us or Butchers bleeding head reminds us of our National traits.....Be Proud and noble ..England forever.

You say what you feel rather than what you think poeple what to hear. it nice to see somebody with a bit of heart on the panel. Like Gareth Southgate said when they needed churchill to lift them up they instead got IDS (The quiet man who cannot even say boo... to a fly!). Sven is a disgrace and england should kiss this world cup goodbye cos they have no chance of winning this cup with an inept roulette player at the herm. As for Steve Mclaren, he has been tarnised by association. Whatever he does the press would always remind him of his contribution as part of a failed team playing very dull, unattractive, sisi-like whimpish and unimaginative football.
sorry for the rant, i am sure you understand i am also talking from the heart.

The big question in recent years has been the left-sided midfield position. It's safe to say that's sorted with Joe Cole and Stewart Downing now - but looking at the England Squad and it's available players, has anbody else noticed the imminent problem of finding a right-back? This is surely Gary Neville's last tournament, and i can't say i've been convinced by Luke Young. who ahve you seen over the past season or two that you think would be able to fill that role?

Dear Mr Wright,
I'd just like to say that I'm impressed with your comments on the world cup so far and well done to the 91Èȱ¬ for hiring you. You portray a different point of view to the normal, one of which an England fan would share.
I have a couple of questions; Firstly, what are your views on Sven's squad selection, especially in relation to right sided midfielders and strikers? And, in my opinion, England have the players to win the world cup, but do you think Sven is tactically good enough to coach the team to glory? Is Sven holding us back? - Not trying to put a downer on the England team here though!
Complain about this post
England only have one major weakness -PASSING THE BALL. I am amazed at the number of times they commit 'unforced errors',even when they have all the time in the world to pick out their own man. Other good teams don't seem to have this problem. That's the reason why England never play the sort of 'flowing football' that wins tournaments.
Complain about this post
Having seen the technical skill of Argentina and the dangers the Dutch pose with threats coming from all over the pitch, is it still realistic to expect England to win the tournament. England tends to play a running game and it seems to me that teams like Argentina, Holland, Italy and Brazil depend less on the physical aspect of the game and let the ball do more of the work.

Does Wrighty feel Steve McClaren should have been picked as England manager as opposed to Sam Allardyce and Alan Curbishley in particular?? also everyone is complaining that the Scots should be supporting the English.
If they didnt mention the 1966 win every ten minutes i am sure alot more Scots would support them. but due to the English mentioning it at every chance possible. even during games that have nothing to do with England, eg the Iran vs Mexico game.
PLEASE PLEASE STOP MENTIONING 66.

Do you think that England's "it's too hot" excuse was acceptable? Surely the 2nd seeds should be able to cope with a bit of heat.
We should still get through the group since we should have enough to beat Shaka Hislop as well as the Swedish Aston Villa old boys team.
Beyond the group however i worry for England particularly Sven's substitutions.

I think taking theo walcott was biggest mistake by any manager. I would have taken JErmaine Defoe.
Leaving shaun wright-phillips out of the squad was a good decision on svens part, because there is no point taking a player that has been sitting on the bench for a season to the world cup, even Theo Walcott played more football this season than SWP.
The only two players I would change woulbe Jenas and Hargreaves, they are as useless as each other, and in their place I would have put Kevin Nolan and Scott Parker.

I hope with the coming of Steve Mcclaren, that a more pressurising premiership style of game will be adopted. I do not agree with the appointment of SM, it should have gone to martin O'neil (track record etc) Sam Allydice (for what he has achieved with limited resources and modern approach to running Bolton)- and if you watch carefully he)McClaren) is as much as a Dickensian yes man to Sven as Phil Neal was to Graham Taylor(has this been so he secures the England job!!) .
All that aside, i hope he can utilise the best the premiership has to offer in a way they are used to - fast paced and pressurising the opposition!!! It is what other countries fear in our national game - so play to that fear!!! You cant undo/reform a season of training and tactics in a few friendlies and internationals - no other country does this !! Somone made a good point this morning on 5 live- Michael Owen himself has said its takes along as you have been injured to regain match fitness - he has been out since January. Why bother to taken him (Owen) when you have two - four premiership (fully fit)strikers to hand. Daren Bent must be particulary miffed to score 18 goals in a mediocre side is worthy of a place.
I'll give SM less than a year!!before the tabloids or the jobs gets to him!!

Q for Glen:
Is it really appropriate to give space to vacuous comments from people who have nothing better to do than criticise Wrighty?
Q for Ian:
For years now we've talked about Englands poor second half performances, even though the players have turned in some quality second halves for their clubs (Stevie G's Champions League final anyone?).
Could it be down to Sven's grasp of tactical substitutions?
Picking the starting line up for England aint that hard, but reacting to the dynamics of an international football match is a little beyond him in my humble opinion.
And finally some Q's for the posters on this thread:
Why should a man whose scoring record for Arsenal has only been beaten by the imperious Mr Thierry Henry be criticised for not knowing enough about football?
Why take time out of your busy lives to live abusive messages for someone about their son?
Who would you have instead of Ian, Ruud "Shouldn't have taken Rooney" Gullit? Sam "I'm not bitter" Allardyce?
Oooh, and do you think that any pundit in the world does heaps and heaps of research before games? Maybe a commentator, but most pundits go off their knowledge of football acquired from a lifetime in the game.. and a big wadge of notes from a 91Èȱ¬ researcher no doubt.

The way england play is so diffrent from the games in the premiership its frankly boring as hell. Do you think if England adopted a better passing system like Arsenal that it would help game play. As a team with a 1 or 2 to nothing lead we cant just sit back.
People talk about Defoe going to the world cup although i think he is a good player he has not been great at 5th place spurs. Do you think Bent would have been a better option for England maybe more friendlies shopuld have been played do you think that could help to?
If you still have Wengers number phone him and ask him 2 buy both bradley and Shaun with cygan going the other way. The kid may be a gooner, but Bent must be feeling sick, right?

If you (Ian Wright) could play up front for England in this tournament, would it be with Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen, Peter Crouch or Theo Walcott? Please explain your reasons why.

Well, minutes after posting a completely reasonable comment about Ian Wrights comments, the 91Èȱ¬ have deleted it from this board.
So not only am I forced to pay a huge sum of money to watch Mr Wrights loutish and disrespectful behaviour, I am now having my basic human rights violated and my freedom of speech taken from me.
Why is this? Can the 91Èȱ¬ not address the fact that Mr Wright has a tendency to overstep the mark at times? If you want a real fans view (which I assume is the only reason why he is on the panel) then why not get someone off the street? I'm sure they may have an advantage over Mr Wright by having some manners and a basic grasp of the English language (Serbia and Montenegro anyone?).
Thanks.

Will Ian be playing on July 22nd for the Bergkamp testimonial ??

Posts on this site have to be eloquent. Please ask Ian if it is at all possible that he could try and be eloquent while he is addressing the nation. Given that this is, to say the least, very unlikely, perhaps he could do the decent thing and slip quietly into the shadows?

Ian,
It's been said by many that we (England) have enough world class players to win this 2006 world cup.
Do you believe that this may all come to nothing because we lack a world class coach?

I would like to ask Ian Wright why he seems to have a strong dislike of Owen Hargreaves?
I feel Hargreaves is the most ridiculously overcriticised player I have ever seen play for England. I feel many fans don't rate him because they've not seen him play apart from the odd 10 minute substitute appearances he makes for England. At the most he's a bit part player for England, if that, and one who is often played out of position as well. Bayern Munich are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and aren't stupid. If Hargreaves was really that bad they'd sell him. By the way I'm not saying Hargreaves is a world class player or anything, just that he's underrated in this country. In my opinion he's no worse than Jermaine Jenas, who no one seems to question.

We should wait until after McLaren's first major tournament before judging Sven. If England do considerably better in this World Cup than they do in Euro 2008, the journalists who have brought Eriksson the sack should have a lot of red faces.

The English need to realise that us Scotts want to see England fail not because we dont have great respect for the talented players in the squad, Its just so we can see Gary Linekar and Ian Wright holding back the tears after having to watch every pre match build up and half time no matter who's playing dedicated to England and what is going on in their camp. I thought that the build up and half time was supposed to be about the teams actually playing..
We Scotts have to have something to laugh at and if we cant laugh at our team's pathetic efforts in major tournaments then seeing the pundits and commentators crushed will have to do...sad i know.

Why are you so against sven? the man has done so much for the team. Is it because your son is not good enough to get in the chelsea side let alone the england one?

Can anyone explain to me (as a female supporter!) why friendly matches are played prior to the big events, surely this is asking for trouble where possible injuries are concerned.

What are the rules regarding ‘keeping’ the World Cup. To my knowledge the Jules Rimet trophy was kept by Brazil on the third time of winning. Is it the same with this trophy, and if so how many teams are in the running to pick it up for a third time?

Dear Mr Wright,
I think you are the worst pundit to have graced a 91Èȱ¬ studio in the history of the 91Èȱ¬ covering the World Cup.
As you only care about adding your thoughts about England games. Why do you bother turning up for the games that do not involve England?
Do you regret berating Owen Hargreaves in the England v Hungary game? How would you have felt a pundit had dismissed your England chances during your oh so illustrious England career.
To be honest you really should have resigned after what you did after the Northern Ireland v England game. But as the 91Èȱ¬ lacks a moral compass these days they are unlikely to sack you.

Does he feel that a more articulate and professional pundit, such as Jamie Redknapp would be able to provide a better service to the 91Èȱ¬ and it’s viewers. His basic grasp of the English language should, you feel be a barrier to being employed by the 91Èȱ¬. Does

England is one of the favorite teams who have chances to win the cup. As a result English fans are not happy with the performance of their players in the first match as they have won by 1-0. However, I think it does not mean that they have lost everything and at least they can take some lesson form the history; Italy won the world cup in 1982 but they started the world cup which was a nightmare.
I think Sven should have taken Defoe as he has proved his performance in the recent matches.
Some questions for Ian Wright:
Do you think that Theo should be given a chance in the next matches as the England strikers is not in their full pace?
What should be the strategy of England in the next matches?
Do you think that Defoe could involve in the final squad as Rooney, Owen had some doubt beforehand and Theo is very inexperience?
Which team has the strong possibility to win the cup?
How do you observe the possibilities of England?

Why does everyone hate Ian Wright so much? He brings a bit of light-hearted humour and 'randomness' to proceedings. For the more 'serious' comments the 91Èȱ¬ has taken about 50 other pundits, so at least Wrighty is something different. I can't wait to see him run around the 91Èȱ¬ studio like a lunatic when England win on the 9th July. Its the World Cup - not a royal funeral so lighten up people.

Wrighty, How do you feel about the inclusion of Theo Walcott into the England squad?
I know alot has been made of his age and such, but considering both Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney were both of similiar age when they got chucked into the limelight do you feel the youngster deserves his chance or do you like many others do think this was a bad choice?

Could you ask Ian if he might consider listening to what Martin O'Neill has got to say before making his inane comments about S&M?
Oh and what has he got on the top brass in 91Èȱ¬ sport to still be employed by them?

Why would we ask Ian Wright his views on any other teams chances etc when he has already stated he is not interested in any other team but England. Very useful for a pundit on non England games!

just a word about hargreaves , yes fair enough he plays regularly for bayern but from recent year the german league has been poor to say the least and that we have players just as capable of filling the holding pole who play right here in england, michael carrick's far suprior distribution alone should be enough to pip hargreaves and as for playing him at right back carragher is the only sensible option there, will be glad when this campaign is over however well we do, as then it is time for an english manager who will play the english way which will work wonders you wait and see, and just a word on sven, as for as having them prepared mentally you can not fault him but when it comes to tactics and having to make quick decisions to change a game then i find him to be very weak and cautious. get some b***s sven and give us a chance of winning this thing because against better opposition we simply cannot afford to try and defend a one nil lead.
