From our reporters in Germany

Living the dream

paul_atherton.gifIBC, MUNICH – It’s not just the likes of me who can’t believe their luck at working on the World Cup – even the presenters keep pinching themselves! Here are Adrian Chiles’ thoughts on working on Match of the Day in Berlin:

If there's one thing worse than anyone being smug, it's a television presenter being smug. But sorry folks, here goes: I am in paradise. Paradise.
I'm in a wonderful city working with incredible people. Try to put yourself in my shoes. Imagine being a lifelong football fan, who as a child, adolescent and adult has suffered joy and despair following club and country; who, over the years, has revered Alan Shearer, Gary Lineker, Gordon Strachan, Ian Wright and Alan Hansen. Then all of a sudden I come to, and I'm sitting with all five of them in Berlin watching England vs Trinidad and Tobago. It just doesn't get any better than this. For one thing, it's a rare chance to see footballers behaving like fans. I've yet to meet a player or manager who fully understands what fans go through, any more than I've met many fans who understand what footballers and managers really go through. But Gary Lineker watching England labour against T&T looks like me watching West Brom. Trust me, that's not a good look. I must admit I like watching these people stressed - it's about time they got a taste of what the rest of us go through. I really must start coming to terms with being in their company. Here's the thing that really worries me though: to keep my place in the book I'm reading I turn over the corner of a page. When I went to bed last night the chambermaid had put a bookmark in that page for me. That's the kind of attention to detail over here that makes me more convinced than ever the Germans will end up winning the flipping thing.

Hey...

Just saw the Argentina game. 6-0! Okay, I'm not from Serbia & Montenegro but every goal that went in hurt. I was just imagining Messi beating Terry and slotting home against England.

Actually, for the first time, I felt confused after the end of England's win over T&T. Cool, we banged in 2 but the performance was awful. Ugly even!

The world cup really can knock the stuffing out of you. And I've been watching most of the matches through 91Èȱ¬'s media player... at my desk! Not sure if I could handle being there!

Paradise, I think not! Well not yet!

Argentina scored the best team goal in World Cup history in their 6-O drubbing of Serbia & Montenegro today. Fact.

Better than *that* brazil goal for sure.

Adios amigos.

Being in Berlin in summer alone is already paradise... well, very close to it. Have you been to the beach club nearby Reichstag yet?

Adrian it looks like you are trying too hard with the 'guys'(overdoing it). I am still getting over you cutting off a caller to 6-0-6 because you said you didn't have to listen to someone criticise a colleague (the so 'balanced' and uncritical ALAN GREEN for God's sake)

It's the 91Èȱ¬ you work for isn't it.
Who's show is it anyway? Are you the new Skinner and Baddiel.

Adrian, just wanted to say how much we enjoy your late-night roundup - especially with wee GS. Like MOTD2 it's better than the main event. To those above having a pop above: "Down negative man, down!"

Argentina were awesome yesterday. Before yesterday's game I thought they looked the most impressive team so far (they were brilliant against the Ivory Coast). That 6-0 drubbing of S&M has just confirmed it for me. It's a worrying sign for England...

however, imnot sure he actually meant his comment about watching a game on ITV, pretty sure he regretted it straight away.

Adrian is not a legend and is pityful excuss for a broadcaster and should be replaced as soon as possible. If this is the best of the bbc's home grown talent then the bbc need to take a long hard look at themselves.
