Ominous words
- 23 May 06, 05:26 PM
LONDON - "Now my focus is on the World Cup. . ." These are the ominous words of the world's greatest footballer Ronaldinho, who refuses to bask in the glory of Barcelona's Champions League triumph in his latest .
A timely reminder, that whether Wayne Rooney is declared fit or not on Thursday, England will probably have to go through Brazil and Ronaldinho to win football's greatest prize.
The defending champs will be training in Switzerland. England are just back from Portugal. So where are the rest of the World Cup teams limbering up? Let us know if you have any inside information - perhaps they are training in your home town.

If I find any team practicing in Miami Florida, I will let you know. Meanwhile, I am gauging the outlook of football in Miami Florida.

Of course Ronaldinho is a contemporary great - but he can be contained, as ten man Arsenal proved. The same should be said of Rooney. What people constantly forget - and England has been guilty of this for years - is that the team is far greater than the individual...

Well, in Holland we know the Dutch team is now in Switzerland and will be back home next week.
After that, they'll move on to Germany and will bring back the Cup.
(I hope)

Ronaldinho was not on fire during the Champions League, missing a volley and mis cueing a shot. Other English players to look out for will be Lampard, Gerrard and the 2 Coles

The World Cup will be more suited to Ronaldinho's style of play than the Champions League final, I reckon.
Oh, & check out Evildinho, his evil twin:

I agree about the comment that Arsenal contained Ronaldinho very well.
There is no reason whatsover why the likes of Terry and Rio cannot do the same.
I think it is the collective force of Brazil that England should worry about if we they meet them.

I'll be looking forward to Steven Gerrard finally (hopefully) getting the opportunity to play for England in a similar role that he does for Liverpool.

Paul's totally right - it's Steven Gerrard that's going to win games for us.
Please, oh please, Sven, let him play where he's best - floating at the front of midfield...

Costa Rica are training in the town next door to us - Walldorf nr Heidelberg. they have just arrived after five days at the Europa Park in Rust, which is abit like the german Alton Towers. On friday night they are making a special appearance at the "Spargelmarkt" (Asparugas market) in Walldorf. Walldorf is situated in the asparagus triangle of Germany!

Well, as I come from the Czech Republic, I am pretty certain that I will have more information than you...
So, Smicer is injured AGAIN:-), Galasek has some problems with his knee ligaments but otherwise everyone seems to be ok. The team is complaining only about one thing, and that is weather. Also, Nedved suggested that he might play in next Euro qualification. That's fantastic news for us. And last information is that Pavel Mares from Zenith Petrohrad, might move to Sparta Prague over the summer.

Great points about Ronaldinho especially about containing him, as has been proved before without space and some heavy tackles he can certainly be brought down a peg or two.
Let's hope his practicing of hitting the crossbar for TV adverts actually pays off and he can't find the net ;)

In Oz the Socceroos(dodgy name I know) play Greece in a friendly in front of 100,000 at the MCG in Melbourne to start their build up to their first World Cup in 32 years.
Media are on to it, lots of hype for the friendly tonight, green and gold flags hanging out of cars etc. What do people think of Australia's chances of getting past the group stages?
Everyone here is super confident and the tradional Aussie Rules Football is being overshadowed , finally!!

As far as Media Hype goes, the situation is the same in Japan. The Japanese team have finished their camp in Japan, and will head out for Germany on Friday (26th). They will be camping at Bonn, and will have a friendly against Germany on June 1.
Bonn would be having a media frenzy unseen since the day Bundestag moved to Berlin from there.

Australia have just beaten Greece 1 - 0 in a friendly in Melbourne. Marco Bresciano scoring the match winner, Someone in the crowd scored a fine for letting off a flare during the game which is not allowed at the MCG (where the game was played)
Australia are looking good even without Kewell and Cahill, they play another friendly against Holland in Holland which is going to be tough

Ronaldinho is almost up there in the pantheon of the greats: Pele, Maradona.
(I 'm writing this while my 2 1/2 year old is kicking the ball up and down the house!!!)
Ronaldinho just needs a few mature and masterful appearances in a few weeks time to be ranked with the greatest.
I agree he was not at his best against Arsenal but am not too sure it was the marking as opposed to too much hype leading to the event. This is probably going to be Ronaldinho's greatest test as everyone expects that with every touch of the ball we are going to see some awesome, scintillating, out of this world ball handling.
(Ball just flew past the screen!!)
He may not be aware of it (even though some of his statements appear to show he knows where he is in this whole scenario) but the expectations can mess with his head.
Come World Cup time he has 10 brilliant mates on the field working with him so the pressure will not be as great so I expect him to rise to this great and wonderful occasion.
I鈥檓 writing from the Caribbean so besides out unfailing love for Brazil, and love/hate relationship with England I am rooting for Trinidad & Tobago.

no one is better than ronaldinho but ronaldinho is not better than steven gerrard!!!!He may be equally good but not better.stevie is a remarkable all rounder[defender, midfielder and a magical striker]ronnie lacks some of his skills.Gerrard has brought with him the glory of football and it will never fade away, even Pele admits how great he is.STEVIE IS A SAVIOUR, HE IS A MAGICIAN AND HE IS A TRUE LEGEND!!!!!
