Out and about at the weekend

Derek Brockway Derek Brockway | 10:22 UK time, Monday, 20 July 2009

Well I hope you had a nice weekend. I managed to go for a
short stroll in the sunshine along The Knapp in Barry on Saturday afternoon.

Yesterday I recorded a walk for Radio Wales in upper Cwmbran for my new Weatherman Walking series.

Fiona Ford, a countryside access officer from Torfaen
Council, was my guide and we got absolutely drenched!

In fact, right at the start of the walk we had to knock on a stranger's house and ask to borrow an umbrella!

Thankfully, they were happy to?oblige. The walk took me on?an old pilgrim's route up to Mynydd Hen Llys.

Unfortunately, the weather was so wet we didn't manage to get to the top but there were some great views towards the Bristol Channel.

We rejoined the route two thirds of the way down an old incline or tramway and passed some lovely old cottages.

Fiona showed me a copy of the 1881 census and I couldn't believe that 14 people lived in a two up two down.

Later on, we stopped at Rachel's Lock on the Monmouthshire canal and then carried on through to new Cwmbran.

We fed a few Welsh cakes to a family of swans and ended up at St. Michael's Church in Llantarnam to see a grave of a real life hero who fought in the Zulu wars in South Africa.

It was a very enjoyable walk despite the rain?and we finished it off with a Sunday roast in the Green House pub.

You'll be able to hear the walk on Radio Wales in a few weeks time so try and tune in if you can.

In the meantime, I am at the Royal Welsh Show this week forecasting the weather.

It's looking drier today but more rain is expected on Tuesday so if you're coming to the showground in Llanelwedd bring your wellies, the car parks could be a little bit muddy after all the rain we have had recently.

I'm afraid summer is very much on hold at the moment although I've just seen people wondering around in flip flops ;)
