The summer of 2007 was one of the wettest on record. Floods devastated homes across the UK. Eighteen months on, many people are facing a second Christmas in a caravan or temporary housing. Justin Rowlatt paid a few of them a visit.

The One Show's Carol Thatcher fulfilled a life-long dream, appearing as the back end of a pantomime cow at a performace in Stevenage.

Last month 91Èȱ¬ Secretary Jacqui Smith unveiled plans to arm front line police officers with stun guns, Anita Rani went to see them in action. Should the police carryÌý stun guns?


Carol Thatcher looked at the history behind the traditional festive poem, 'Twas the night before Christmas'.

He's a distinguished screenwriter, actor, children's writer, novelist, and travel documentarian. But what is it about Michael that makes him such a national treasure?

The One Show's experiment in creating a classic Christmas pop song has finally been unleashed upon the public. 'Let's Not Fight This Christmas' by Chris Difford and the Decorations was given its world premiere on The One Show, Friday 5th December 2008.

Chris Difford is the Chris Difford of Squeeze - he supplied lead vocals and the lyrics. The Decorations are The One Show's family of presenters - they provided their singing voices and dancing skills. Luckily, Chris Difford is quite good at lead vocals and lyrics.

Will 'Let's Not Fight' scale theÌýcharts? The competition is fierce this year. Heavyweight contenders include Geraldine McQueen (aka Peter Kay), Aled Jones, Leona Lewis, Status Quo and the winner of the X-Factor. Click here to watch clips of some of the bookies' favourites to be top of the pops.

Actress Alison Steadman joined Adrian and Christine on the sofa.


In the first part of her report on A&Es, Anita Rani began her investigation into the pressure created by alcohol related admissions.


We continued to profile the ten 91Èȱ¬ Sports Personality of the Year nominees. Tonight two gold medal olympic heroes, yachtsman Ben Ainslie and cyclist Nicole Cooke were in The One Show spotlight. Who should win Sports Personality?


Des Coleman got to grips with what the music industry calls 'the hook' - a crucial ingredient in any festive hit. The One Show's very own Christmas contender will be revealed on Friday.


And Mike Dilger our intrepid wildlife investigator, was on the sofa to chat with Adrian and Christine after he took to the trees to find Britain's rarest bird, the Scottish Crossbill.

December 2, 2008: Every night this week The One Show is putting festive hits under the music microscope. We're trying to find the formula for a Christmas classic.


Last night's programme saw Des Coleman chatting to Adrian and Christine about reviving the Christmas single, and Des announced a One Show experiment - can the programme have a festive hit in the pop charts by applying the lessons of number ones of Christmas past?


The lyrics have been written for us by Chris Difford of Squeeze and The One Show's family of presenters have got involved. All proceeds will go to Children in Need.


The competition is fierce this year. Heavyweight contenders for the number one spot include Geraldine McQueen (aka Peter Kay), Aled Jones, Leona Lewis, Status Quo and the winner of the X-Factor.
