About John Beattie
- 17 Jan 07, 12:45 PM
I was born in Borneo, and swinging from tree to tree helped me in later years as I ended up playing rugby for Scotland.
This was predicted, funnily enough, by my Malaysian headmaster who said, on the day I left to start his new life in Scotland as an eleven year old: 鈥淏eattie, you are the roughest boy we have ever had here - you will surely play rugby for your new country.鈥
I won 25 caps and went on two British Lions tours and on retiring slid into broadcasting even though Chartered accountancy was tugging at my heart strings..
I play guitar in a rock band for fun, coach West of Scotland rugby club, and host radio and TV programmes North of Hadrian鈥檚 wall.
I鈥檓, frankly, a bit alarmed that my son, also John, now plays international rugby as it doesn鈥檛 seem that long since the child was brought home in a blanket.

When John junior scored against Romania on his debut you seemed to be quite composed, how did you manage to stay so impassive?!? Surely you had a little smile to yourself...Also, any predictions for Scotland this nations?

John, you gotta say something. Hadden KEEPS picking Di Rollo(ver) and Parks. They are a liablity for Scotland - always have been and always will be. We go to pick Paterson or Ross at 10 and get some of the dangerous/powerful runners like Walker and Webster into the back line. Hadden has lost his mind by continuing to select Di Rollover, a centre who can't run, tackle and regularly loses possesion in contact. And to compound matters he has once again reverted to Dan Parks, a fly-half who can't run, tackle or kick. These 2 players are so obviously out of their depth at this level. This is madness upon madness. Say something John - only you can save Scotland.

Sorry it has taken so long to respond, I didn't realise people were commenting on me. I remained calm because I didn't want his debut game or try to be remembered for a father going nuts in the commentary box. I did have a proud little smile to myself.
As the Six Nations are finished it would be unfair to now make a prediction!

Hey John, was at West for the Hawks game. Magnificent. What a barmy army. Great to see you striding the touch line, and perhaps even better, running to hug the opposition coach at the end. That's what rugby at this level is about - play hard, then have a beer together. It was like the old days really - heroes on the pitch - Gordon Bulloch, Rory Kerr, mixing with aspiring youngsters, and solid club men; and familiar faces in the crowd accessible to fans - Sean Lineen, Alan Bulloch, John Beattie jnr...well done. Keep up the good work. Scottish rugby needs you
