Updates to the comments function
In the next 24hours the code running the comments functions on these pages will be updated for this blog and a few others.Ìý This is the first wave of a change that get's rolled out across 91Èȱ¬ blogs over the next week, so there's an element of "trial" to this (just what we like here at R&D).
The changes you'll notice are around the way the page behaves as you submit a comment- it won't reload for one thing.Ìý The style of the box is getting an update, and there will be more labels and information in the page to make it clearer what's happened.
In the background there is some improved caching which should improve performance and the bandwidth demand should come down a bit.Ìý Eventually this backend development will underpin a new generation of comments platform for us, but for now, we're getting a few key advantages without a massive overhaul.
We hope to have a few films later this week for you to take a look at, but until then, enjoy the new elements of this site.Ìý

2 The preview box introduces an extra two line spaces between paragraphs, which are then taken out in the posted comment. Is there a reason for the preview box to do this?
3 In the archive listings of the blog entries for a particular month (e.g. here), why is it that only the first ten entries on each list have the number of comments shown?
4 On some early blogs, the comments are not numbered. Do you plan to retrospectively number them?

From some messageboards (mb) eg iPlayer and pov I can access not only mb posts but also blog comments. From iPlayer I am able to see #6 but on pov #6 does not yet appear. This could be a known glitch in the dna servers and database relating to old mb and not relate to changes you are making. Or even be related to the fact that I am in pre-mod on this blog.
Incidentally recently improved mb eg R4 and Food no longer give direct access to blog comments, I suppose it has been decided that is unnecessary.
Some blogs are short and short lived, some however do generate a lot of interest and therefore a lot of comments. I know you are not asking for suggestions so this may be going off topic but ideas relating to use of the "my comments" listing as it appears for each users profile:
- an option to list/filter comments to single blog not all blogs.
Some blogs get hundreds of comments, following one's own or someone else's comments may be easier just looking at the one blog.
(or may wish to avoid particular blogs)
- links to the actual comment location
(rather than just to body of blog or bottom of comments listing)
- page numbers
I am sure it has been discussed elsewhere, and I suspect length of page as in number of posts listed per page may be contentious. I personally may find it useful to have some page numbering as clickable links rather than just newer/older.

It has been tried on the 91Èȱ¬ Internet blog and breaks links to previous comments.
I do note you said this is a trial. How about trying with voluntary beta trials, & in-house testing before doing this sort of thing.
Have you noted what has happened with the messageboard "improvements" even after a set of 23 'Fixes'
( Look at this 700+ posts over a Weekend thread if you have not: /dna/mbarchers/NF2693942?thread=7886354&skip=0#p103166513 )

The blogs profile page, for a user such as myself, currently lists comments and includes a header for each comment that is a link.
The header also indicates the time and date of the comment.
The link itself goes only to the origianl 91Èȱ¬ blogpost not to the comment.
If I remember correctly the profile from messageboards that used to display Blog Comments used to include a link to the actual comment. In fact I imagine the date and time text is probably intended to be a link.
I note the link itself is terminated in ".html#P"
Apparently of course the new format links to comments do not contain a "P", although they do contain a repeated number.
I have commented on some of these matters in the other blog, ( /blogs/bbcinternet/2010/11/changes_to_comments_on_bbc_int.html?postId=103477009 ) and apparently some changes are being made.

Is this for instance an indication that blog comments may become threaded at some time in the near future rather than be merely linear comments all replying to the Original Blogpost.
