BB 2010 - Who is Steve Gill?

Zoe E Breen Zoe E Breen | 08:48 UK time, Thursday, 10 June 2010

So with the excitement of the launch night of Big Brother Series 11 behind us, what do we know about Steve Gill, the second contestant selected to enter the BB house last night?

Steve is a double amputee, having lost both legs and an eye while serving in Northern Ireland 20 years ago. He lives in Leicester and has eight children and is a keen yacht racer who enjoys the outdoors. He lobbies for soldiers who have been injured on duty.

Besides admitting to a phobia of crowded rooms, Steve has revealed that he had his first tattoo when he was 15. It bore a girl's name, part of which was blown off in his accident and the remaining part he keeps covered up.

Comments about Steve on the Big Brother website have ranged from indignance at him being unemployed since he was injured 20 years ago to adulation for him as a 'hero' and 'an inspiration'.

We'd love to hear what you think about the Big Brother line-up this year and your predictions about Steve's time in the BB house. Add your comment below.

Unfortunatly this will result in the population saying that any disabled person can be 'normal'. He is demonstrating to the public that he can just get on with it, whereas many disabled people can't and this may create the wrong impression.

Good on him for getting in, but I do fear that he will be held as an example for the disabled population. Its just like the characters in soaps, they are 'just like everyone else'. It denys their disability. It was good that there was no fuss made of him going in the side door, but then, really there should have been, and surely everyone deserves to have the same entrance and this should have been facilitated as it already marks him out as different...

I too was saddened by the fact that Steve was ushered in through a side door.

If he wins, will he be ushered out the same way...???

Devina made a big deal of the specially designed wall-paper in the bathroom at the BB house, which probably cost a fortune, and yet - in however many years the show has been going for now - they still haven't been able to make the house accessible....

'they still haven't been able to make the house accessible....'

    There's no entertainment in 'accessible'

    Oh God. I can't believe I commented.
